I needed to give my eyes a time to rest for a bit after working on different settings to achieve that retro 80’s look. For one thing though, one kind of effect I didn’t want was to tune down the saturation since it kinda made the whole point of making the scene so colorful pretty moot. Besides, for some reason the word “technicolor” came to mind and I do remember some old pictures despite looking grainy and stuff, being rather colorful with a slightly higher than normal level of saturation.
I wondered why and after a while, I decided to look up some old cartoons and there you go, that’s why it looked right to me.
So when paired with some not-porno 80’s funk it does look and sound rather convincing.
Now I do want to note that not all retro movies look like so. Alongside exploitation films like the various Mondo and Cannibal movies with the iconic (everything is color corrected green and yellow and with a slight bloom to the lighting) you also have The Godfather which has subtle orange color correcting and has film grain to it.
Yesterday I completed the secondary “base” for the dancing scenes. The way I do things nonlinearly nowadays, I no longer see it as choosing what kind of motion to use but as a “pick the best or sexiest segments of a dance and render them” then just use some kind of post processing editing to connect these two scenes together. After all, the nice thing with making these projects with such an editor is that I can cut to something else then cut back to the dance afterwards.
What I’m trying to say is, when I look at this again
it actually looks OLDER, like a 60’s flick that overcompensates with some garish coloring. In fact it looks like what a picture would look like back then in magazines after they colored it.
There are two ideas I have for cutting away from the parade, one is to cut to certain onlookers, this reinforces the image that audience isn’t just a sea of clones, and they can help sell the effect of whatever sexy or scandalous thing Karen is doing. Kinda like what I did with the last project. Another added benefit is that I can keep the ambient cheering and hooting going. In other words, not only the video, but also the audio helps with the continuity while allowing me to skip having to do the tedious labor of having Karen transititon awkwardly from one motion to the next.
The other treatment is do away with the ambience completely, which is okay except for the fact that it really takes away from the liveliness of the festivities.
Now as for the theme of this project, watching all these cheesy b-movies and mondo/exploitation flicks gives me an inspiration to parody that genre as a means to intentionally put in hammy overacting motions and plots, as well as an excuse to use really cheesy and simplistic effects.
And of course, some really tongue-in-cheek titles.
